Starting July 1, 2026, new federal student loan borrowers will have just two options:

• More frequent redeterminations: Starting December 2026, states must verify Medicaid expansion eligibility every 6 months, replacing the previous annual check.

• SSI/SSDI exception only: Only those on Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) are spared—everyone else faces this added burden.

What it means:
More paperwork means twice as many forms, deadlines, and data checks for people just trying to stay insured. It’s not because their circumstances changed—it’s just more red tape.

States will have to hire more staff, enhance their systems and scale up their technology capability to handle the frequent checks or face penalties. This is added cost to Medicaid offices which are already under-resourced and causes an administrative burden.

There will be more unintentional drop-offs of eligible people – especially senior citizens, the disabled, and low-income families who will lose coverage because of missed mail, missed deadlines, and/or clerical errors. These are not fraudsters, they are everyday people who will get stuck in bureaucratic quicksand.

By forcing people to “prove” their eligibility twice a year, the OBBBA punishes poverty with paperwork and hoops to jump through. Also, notice the timeliness of the start date – December 2026, after the midterm elections.

Real-World Evidence

Arkansas:

According to the Wall Street Journal, Arkansas’ implementation of quarterly checks for adult recipients ages 30- 49 resulted in more than 18,000 losing their coverage due to missed reports – even though most were compliant or exempt.

A survey by Harvard showed the more frequent eligibility checks did not result in any employment benefits because 95% of them were already working or were exempt from work requirements (i.e. disabled)

There were serious health impacts among those who lost Medicaid:

· 50% had trouble paying medical bills

· 56% delayed needed care

· 64% skipped medications because of cost

A federal judge struck it down in March 2019, ruling it “arbitrary and capricious”.

Georgia:

In July 2023, Georgia began its “Pathways” program, requiring monthly reporting of 80 hours of work or training. Despite the program targeting more than 240,000 recipients, only about 7500 people signed up by early 2025.

There were high administrative costs: consultants and IT support siphoned off tens of millions – even as enrollment rates stalled.

The state removed 600,000 Medicaid recipients – not because they were ineligible, but for procedural reasons.

Impact on Hospitals and Clinics

The new law is poised to deeply destabilize hospitals and clinics across the country, especially in rural areas, underserved communities, and states with high Medicaid enrollment.

Since hospitals and clinics get paid when Medicaid patients are treated, this means:

· More unpaid medical bills (aka "uncompensated care").

· Tighter margins, especially for safety-net hospitals.

Medicaid accounts for more than 16% of hospital revenue nationally. In rural hospitals, it’s often higher. Ask yourself, could you lose 16% of your income and still run your household?

Nearly half of all rural hospitals already operate at a loss. Medicaid payments are crucial to their survival. Specialty and children’s hospitals will also lose revenue.

Broader Impacts and Concerns

• Policy Goal or Savvy Cost-Cutting? The provision is framed as fraud prevention, but it functions primarily as a mass disenrollment tool.

• Shifting Burden: These “admin savings” shift costs to states—which now face stricter staffing needs for processing redeterminations or face federal penalties.

• Increased Uncompensated Care: Hospitals will absorb more medical costs as fewer patients are covered—a triple whammy when paired with provider tax cuts and funding caps.

Section 71109: Noncitizen Medicaid Coverage Gutted

This section slashes eligibility for lawfully present immigrants by rolling back the 5-year waiting period exemption granted under the Affordable Care Act.

• Who it affects: Children and pregnant people who are legally residing in the U.S. but haven’t been here for five years.

• What changes: States will no longer be allowed to offer them Medicaid using federal funds—even if they are otherwise eligible.

Impact: This will disproportionately hurt mixed-status families, block prenatal care access, and burden safety-net providers in immigrant-rich areas. Experts warn it could worsen public health outcomes and neonatal care.

Modernizing the electrical grid is critically important—for reliability, resilience, climate adaptation, and national security. Utility companies need to modernize the grid now more than ever because the infrastructure is aging and breaking down. The U.S. power grid was built more than seventy years ago, and it shows. The blackouts and equipment failures show the system isn’t built to support today’s energy demands.

With climate change fueling stronger storms, heatwaves, wildfires, and deep freezes, we need a modernized grid with smart sensors, underground lines, and better regional coordination to reduce outages and speed up recovery. These cuts make modernization less likely.

The growth in cybersecurity and sabotage attacks further underscores the need to protect critical infrastructure. It’s a national security issue. The cuts make us less safe.

5. Cleaner Fuel Standards & HFC Phase-Out

The new law also slashes funds to:

• Improve the quality of fuels (e.g., blending biofuels with gas)

• Enforce cleaner refrigerant rules under the American Innovation and Manufacturing Act, which curbs super-polluting gases used in AC and refrigeration

These gases trap thousands of times more heat than CO₂. But hey—cooling profits matter more than a heating planet.

The Real Danger: Quiet Reversals

These changes weren’t voted on by the public. They weren’t debated on the news. They were buried in a bill—and signed with a smile.

Why This Is Happening — and Why You Should Care

Supporters of this change argue that it reins in runaway entitlement spending and restores “fiscal responsibility.”

But the real motivation is ideological: it’s a quiet return to the era of austerity disguised as reform. It’s the same old trick — slash social safety nets in the name of budget control, while writing billion-dollar checks for defense and corporate subsidies and they’ve now added billions for their secret police (ICE) and tax cuts for those who don’t need help.

How to Fight Back

1. Call it out. Share this information widely. Most people have no idea this provision exists, especially since Congressional Republicans have repeatedly lied about what is in the legislation.

2. Contact your representatives and let them know how you feel about what they have done then show them how you feel in the 2026 Mid-term elections.

Vote. Don’t just watch the circus — organize and hold policymakers accountable. Your representatives knew what was in this bill, knew how it would affect their constituents, in some cases, lied to our faces on camera when asked about these cuts. Some said they had concerns, but they still voted for the bill to pass. Soe said they were a no vote, and then Donald Trump called them to a meeting, signed some merch, gave them some trinkets and then they voted for it! You should be mad as hell! I know I am.

Congress passed the mammoth “One Big Beautiful Bill” (OBBB), and President Trump just signed it. On its face, it offers something for everyone: expanded child tax credits, limited Medicare support, and student loan reforms. But don’t be fooled—the good stuff is temporary, the bad stuff is permanent, and the net result will punish the vulnerable and reward the wealthy.

Context: Traditionally, every President looks to pass major legislation in their first year in office. Usually what happens is, the administration will identify a problem it would like to solve or a condition affecting large swaths of the American people, it would like to address. It will then work with Congress to author and pass legislation. So, as you read summaries of some provisions of the bill just passed, ask yourself this question: What problem are they trying to solve with this legislation?

Trimming Medicaid & Medicare with Work Mandates

• $863 billion cut from Medicaid over 10 years → 10.3 million fewer people with coverage by 2034, including 1.3 million who rely on Medicare safety nets.

• New work requirements—80 hours/month—imposed on Medicaid recipients aged 19–64, starting as early as 2027.

Environmental protection advocate, Friends of The Everglades as well as members of the Miccosukee Tribe asked DeSantis to scrap the plan. They assert the construction would “inflict significant damage to the ecosystem.”

The site, reportedly secured through quiet backdoor land deals orchestrated by Governor DeSantis and rubber-stamped by a compliant Florida legislature, sits on what was once designated as ecologically protected land. Florida environmentalists and residents successfully halted the development of a major airport on the site back in 1970. A federal report found that the proposed jetport would “inexorably destroy the South Florida ecosystem and thus the Everglades National Park. The reason there is only one runway on the site is because a smaller portion of the site was developed into the Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport and primarily used for aviation training.

But the transformation from conservation zone to prison zone has taken mere weeks. The 11,000- foot runway has been adapted to house a tent city expected to house up to 5,000 individuals and will be used to further the Trump administration’s efforts to increase detention capacity and accelerate deportations.

Crass Branding, Cruel Conditions

If the ethics weren’t already in the toilet, consider this: the state—or one of its contracted vendors—is now selling “Alligator Alcatraz” merchandise.

Think about that. Hats. T-shirts. Mugs.

All to commemorate a prison camp for deportees being placed in a region prone to category 4 and 5 hurricanes, rising floodwaters, and record-breaking heat indexes.

While ICE claims the tents and trailers are “temporary,” environmental experts and human rights advocates warn this is an ecological and humanitarian disaster in the making.

“Where will the waste of 5,000 people go?”

The Everglades already has poor drainage, vulnerable water tables, and delicate species. The introduction of human sewage, medical waste, and construction debris only magnifies the concern.

The resounding refrain from experts, pundits, and the public alike regarding many of Trump’s appointees: “these are not serious people”.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer stated, "Putting someone with zero disaster response experience in charge of FEMA as hurricane season begins is reckless and dangerous."

A Pattern, Not an Outlier

Richardson is not the first unqualified, unprepared or controversial department head appointed during Trump 2.0. There is an unmistakable and indefensible pattern visible here. Consider:

• Kash Patel, - a conspiracy theorist and denigrator of the FBI, now heads the FBI and until recently, The ATF

• Robert F. Kennedy Jr – a known anti-vaxer appointed Secretary of Health and Human Resources

• Andrew Wheeler, a former coal lobbyist, was appointed head of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), where he rolled back key environmental protections.

• Linda McMahon, a former professional wrestling executive, is now serving as the Secretary of Education. Her recent comments referring to artificial intelligence as "A1" during a press conference—suggesting a fundamental misunderstanding of the technology—have sparked widespread ridicule and concern. Education experts and lawmakers alike criticized the statement as evidence of her lack of familiarity with pressing issues in modern education, particularly in an era where digital literacy is paramount.

The appointment of Pete Hegseth as Secretary of Defense ignited significant and ongoing controversy, highlighting concerns about qualifications and ideological motivations within the current administration

Lack of Qualifications and Experience

Hegseth's background includes service as an Army National Guard officer and roles as a conservative media commentator. However, critics argue that he lacks the extensive leadership experience typically expected for the role of Defense Secretary. A gift of that magnitude is never “free.” Qatar, like any nation, expects a return on such an investment. This is exactly the type of foreign entanglement the Constitution sought to prevent.

Trump’s Trips to the Middle East: Business, Not Diplomacy

Since taking office, Trump has made repeated trips to the Middle East—but not for diplomacy. These trips are tied to private business dealings involving his family and foreign leaders. While the optics suggest foreign policy, the reality suggests profiteering.

The spectacle continued with a White House crypto dinner featuring the launch of the $Trump meme coin. Meme coins are cryptocurrencies with no inherent utility—driven instead by internet hype, speculation, and influencer buzz.

According to Bloomberg, the dinner hosted the top twenty investors in the coin, including Chinese billionaire Justin Sun—a controversial figure who had previously been sued by the SEC under the Biden administration for market manipulation.

Market manipulation involves deceptive practices to artificially inflate or deflate an asset’s value—often at the public’s expense. Coincidentally (or not), after Sun invested $93.6 million across multiple Trump crypto ventures, the new Trump-led SEC paused its investigation into him.

Trump himself appeared for only fifteen minutes at the dinner, standing before the Presidential Seal while Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt insisted, he was there “in his personal capacity.” The grift could not be more transparent.

The “Big Beautiful Bill”: Cruelty with a Price Tag

Trump’s major legislative victory—his so-called “Big Beautiful Bill”—includes extreme policy provisions with potentially devastating consequences.

• $150 billion for immigration deportation

• $700 billion cut from Medicaid

Cutting Medicaid at that scale could result in 8–14 million Americans losing health coverage, according to health policy analysts. Worse still, rural hospitals, many of which rely heavily on Medicaid reimbursements, are on life support. Of the 700 rural hospitals in the U.S., over 300 are at imminent risk of closure.

These hospitals often serve as the largest employers in their communities, so closures would create job loss, decimate local economies, and severely restrict access to emergency and specialty care.

Dissent = Terrorism?

Buried in Trump’s legislation is a chilling provision: the ability to revoke a nonprofit’s tax-exempt status if it is deemed to “support terrorism.” However, no proof is required—just a claim from the government.

This opens the door to politically motivated retaliation against dissenting voices. It’s a classic tactic from authoritarian regimes: label opponents as terrorists, strip their protections, and silence them.

Already, we’ve seen signs of this authoritarian impulse. After all, he repeatedly said “I am your retribution” during campaign speeches. An analysis by NPR found that the President has targeted and acted against more than 100 people and institutions. The list includes lawyers, law firms, political opponents, investigators who worked on January 6^th, whistleblowers, media companies, universities, and some from the first Trump administration who he considers disloyal.

A recent example is his administration’s attempt to limit the contempt power of judges, undercutting their ability to enforce rulings against his administration.

As Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) warned, “The contempt power of the courts is inherent in the courts.” Removing it is not just unconstitutional—it’s tyrannical.

Harvard in the Crosshairs

Harvard University refused to comply with Trump administration demands related to DEI policy rollbacks. In response, the administration has:

• Threatened to revoke its tax-exempt status

• Cut off federal research funds

• Begun deporting international students, who contribute billions to the U.S. economy

Again, this is textbook retribution: use the machinery of government to punish ideological noncompliance.

Who’s Pulling the Strings?

Groups like the Heritage Foundation, America First Policy Institute and America First Legal were integral in designing the vision now being implemented. These well-funded, far-right organizations have long sought to centralize executive power, eliminate government “waste” (i.e., public services), and institutionalize nationalist authoritarianism.

The Goal: Centralization and Control

Every action—from court challenges to media suppression to Medicaid cuts—feeds into a singular goal: centralized power in the hands of the executive. The very institutions designed to check that power are being disassembled brick by brick.

This includes:

• Undermining judicial independence

• Defunding or discrediting public education

• Gutting social safety nets

• Funneling wealth to the top richest people

• Media control

It’s all part of a deliberate strategy to erode democracy itself.

We Must Act—Now

We’re not powerless. The road to reversing this erosion of rights starts with the 2026 midterm elections. Gaining supermajorities in both houses of Congress is not just strategic—it’s essential. That will allow:

• Restoration of critical federal programs

• Checks on presidential overreach

• Legislation to safeguard judicial independence

We must also fight for Supreme Court expansion—adding 2 to 4 justices to rebalance the Court, which has increasingly sided with authoritarian policies.

If birthright citizenship is invalid for some, it becomes arbitrary, subjective, and ultimately, revocable by political whim. A dangerous road.

The Racial Double Standard

Let's name the truth: many of those who oppose birthright citizenship aren't talking about European immigrants. They’re not targeting the descendants of Italian, Irish, or German immigrants. Instead, the scrutiny falls disproportionately on children of Latino, African, Asian, and Middle Eastern descent.

This double standard reveals the true aim—exclusion based on ethnicity and race, not legal consistency.

A Threat to All

Dismantling birthright citizenship undermines a foundational principle of American democracy: that everyone born on U.S. soil is equally American, regardless of heritage. If that principle becomes negotiable:

• Citizenship becomes conditional based on things like race, class, or ideology

• Rights become revocable

• Future generations could be rendered stateless

What happens to the descendants of enslaved African Americans if the 14th Amendment is hollowed out? Could a future court rule that their generational claim to citizenship is also invalid, since their ancestors were brought here involuntarily? It may sound extreme, but legal precedent is shaped by slippery slopes.

And what of the descendants of Chinese, Irish, or Jewish immigrants—groups once despised, now woven into the fabric of American identity? The threat posed by ending birthright citizenship is not limited to any one group. It endangers the very definition of who we are.

Who Gets to Be American?

If the standard is ancestral legitimacy, then only Native Americans truly qualify. Everyone else—white, Black, Asian, Latino—is here because of migration, forced or voluntary. The entire American experiment rests on the idea that being here, being born here, or becoming naturalized here is enough.

To challenge that idea is to challenge the glue that holds the nation together.

Final Thought

If birthright isn’t valid for some, it isn’t valid for anyone. Citizenship cannot be a prize awarded by ideology. It must remain a promise guaranteed by principle.

In a time of rising exclusion and narrowing definitions of who belongs, defending birthright citizenship is more than legal advocacy—it is a stand for a democratic and inclusive America.

The last 114 days feels like an eternity to those of us who feel Donald Trump’s policies are wreaking havoc on our economy, our lives, our standing in the world, our alliances, and yes, our psyche.

After the 2024 election returned Donald Trump to the presidency and gave Republicans control of both chambers of Congress, we entered a new chapter of hardline governance—one marked by escalating culture wars, tightened federal controls, and policies that increasingly reflect minority ideologies over majority will. Now, more than ever, Americans face a pivotal truth: no one is coming to save us. If we want real change, we must build it—with our voices, our votes, and our vision for something better.

What’s Happening Now

The Trump administration’s second term has brought aggressive shifts in both domestic and foreign policy:

• Immigration crackdowns and deportations have proceeded with flagrant cruelty and no due process

• Tariffs and trade wars are destabilizing global markets and contributing to higher prices at home.

• The Department of Justice, once seen as independent, now faces accusations of political weaponization.

And beneath all that noise, millions of everyday Americans are experiencing cost of living increases, stagnant wages, and a volatile job market.

Immigration Deportations

Federal agents from ICE and Homeland Security are trampling on due process as they implement the administration’s deportation orders. On May 9th, White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller issued a veiled threat to the judiciary in a tone dripping with smugness and entitlement. Miller stated that the President would suspend habeas corpus “depending on what the courts do”, he said. While it is true that habeas corpus has previously been suspended three times, Congress alone, not the President, has the power to suspend habeas corpus and then only under very specific circumstances.

Here are a few highlights of what the administration has been doing for the past 114 days:

· ICE and Homeland Security agents have been “disappearing” people and sending them to ICE detention centers in various states

· Many immigration lawyers across various parts of the country have received letters demanding they leave the United States immediately. They are US citizens.

· Homeland Security (HIS) agents and agents from other federal law enforcement literally BROKE IN to a woman’s home in Nebraska and forced her and her daughters out into the rain in their underwear. They took cash and electronic items from her home even after realizing she was not the target of the warrant

· ICE tried to prevent congressional reps from conducting oversight on an ICE detention center in Newark and arrested Mayor Ras Baraka because he asserted that the operation of the facility in his city was not legal. The agents requested he leave the property. He complied. The top brass from the area ICE office were all on scene but arrested him only after speaking with “someone” on the phone. The Mayor was on city property at the time.

I mean, are we through the looking glass here? Will we wake up in time to save the Republic and continue this grand experiment of rule by the People? Or will we continue to devolve into a country run by a cruel, petty, and unqualified ruling class that attacks dissent and obliterates the rule of law?

Tariffs

The strikingly unpopular policy position is exacerbated by the President’s “let them eat cake” attitude as he sits in a gilded and gaudily re-appointed (at taxpayer expense) White House telling the American people they should tighten their belts and proposing parents get their little girls “two dolls instead of thirty dolls”. The devastating effects of the trade war Donald Trump started for absolutely no reason have not yet been felt by the American people. Like most economic outcomes, there is a lag between an action and its effect. The damage to our economy and our standing in the world will become clearer in the months to come.

Meanwhile, it’s reported that Donald Trump is going to accept a $400 million gift from the country of Qatar. A luxury jet. Today, Trump took to Truth Social to decry the outrage over his accepting the gift, defend himself and lie stating “the Boeing 747 is being given to the United States Air Force/Department of Defense, NOT TO ME! It is a gift from a Nation, Qatar, that we have successfully defended for many years,” he wrote. He claims it will save money and that it is necessary because of the delays from Boeing. Really?

First, it’s only being “given” to the defense department now because of the bipartisan backlash concerning the emoluments clause and risk to national security. Secondly, have we really defended Qatar for years? In 2017, Trump name-checked them for funding organizations such as al-Qaida, Hezbollah, and others. But now, after all the monetary investment into the Trump Organization and ventures by Trump-adjacent businessmen (Elon Musk), Qatar is A-Okay in Trump’s book.

While it is true that he has temporarily lowered tariffs on goods from China, the entire debacle has left us worse off as a country and the laughingstock of the world. China was never “calling’ or “in talks” as was alleged. China was busy developing partnerships and sourcing goods from other markets while simultaneously roasting the U.S. on social media.

Weaponization of Government

He promised it. He said it repeatedly on the campaign trail. “I am your retribution”, he said in 2023. Now, in his first 100 days, he is carrying out his promise. Perceived political enemies, news media, current and former federal and state government officials, universities, law firms, and student protesters have been targeted. The administration has launched investigations, frozen grant funds, revoked security clearances for certain law firms’ attorneys, fired employees, and banned companies from receiving federal contracts.

Why 2026 Is Our Tipping Point

The 2026 midterm elections will determine whether we continue down this path—or reroute it entirely.

If Democrats take back two-thirds majorities in both the House and Senate, it will drastically alter the political landscape. They’ll have the power to:

• Push through federal protections on voting rights, abortion access, and civil liberties

• Strengthen gun control legislation and public safety initiatives

• Advance environmental justice and infrastructure reform

• Counterbalance executive overreach through congressional oversight

• Fund education, healthcare, and small business programs that have been sidelined

In short: reclaiming Congress in the right proportions means reclaiming a say in what this country becomes.

We Can’t Vote Our Way to Utopia, But Not Voting Will Break Everything

Let’s be clear—voting alone doesn’t fix everything. But without it, we are complicit in standing still. And stillness is not neutral; it’s regression. The idea that voting doesn’t matter is often fed to us by those who want nothing more than for us to give up. Not voting will allow the destruction to continue.

Your vote, especially in a midterm election when turnout is typically low, has exponential power.

Action Beats Apathy

If you’re overwhelmed, good. That means you care. But caring must turn into doing:

• Research your congressional candidates. What’s their track record? Who funds them? Where do they stand on the issues that matter most to you?

• Support voter education and registration efforts. Especially in marginalized communities.

• Challenge misinformation. Your voice in your circles matters.

• Volunteer. Donate. Talk about it. Politics is personal. Make it visible.

This Is Bigger Than Trump

This isn’t about one man. It’s about the apparatus that is insulating him and obediently carrying out his wishes—and we have the power to change that apparatus. It’s about whether the next generation inherits a democracy... or a brand.

The 2026 midterms aren’t just another blip in the cycle. They are the battleground for America’s moral compass.

And the truth is simple:
No one is coming to save us. So, we must save ourselves.

But what does it mean to curate a life—and how is that different from simply living one?

The Myth of “Natural” Living

Much of modern life is engineered, not organic. Algorithms suggest what we watch. Jobs define our hours. Even leisure is structured. Curating your life, then, is an act of resistance against autopilot—a way of reclaiming agency.

Rather than being swept along by obligation or inertia, the curated life asks:

• What do I value?

• What do I allow into my space—physically, emotionally, digitally?

• What story am I telling with my time, habits, and relationships?

It’s not about perfection. It’s about intentionality.

Digital Identity as a Museum Exhibit

We live in public more than ever. Our posts, playlists, tweets, and bios collectively form a digital exhibit—our online selves. But is this identity curated by us, or by how we want to be perceived?

Curating your digital presence means owning your narrative, not outsourcing it to trends, peer pressure, or algorithms. It’s the difference between:

• Sharing because it aligns with your purpose
  vs.

• Posting because the platform rewards it.

The curated life extends into digital spaces: it's edited, thoughtful, and consistent with your values.

Minimalism, Boundaries, and the “No” Muscle

Curation requires exclusion as much as inclusion. In art, a well-curated show says this, not that. In life, it means learning to say no—to commitments that drain you, media that overwhelms you, relationships that deplete you.

You don’t have to do everything. You only have to do what matters.

And yes, that takes practice.

Curating, Not Controlling

Intentional living is not the same as micromanaging. Life is unpredictable. Curation allows room for surprise—it sets the stage but doesn’t script the play. The curated life is flexible, but it is anchored in clarity and purpose.

It’s also forgiving. You can revise. Reset. Redefine. The art of curation is also the art of reflection.

So… How Do You Curate a Life?

A few grounded, practical starting points:

• Audit your time: Are you spending it on what feeds you or what drains you?

• Declutter inputs: Your environment, calendar, and social media diet shape your mind more than you think.

• Create rituals: Curation isn’t just about removal; it’s about meaning-making. Intentional habits become the framework of your story.

• Define your values: Then align decisions with them—especially the small, daily ones.

• Remember you are the artist: And, also the exhibit.

Final Thought

To curate a life is to choose, daily, to live on purpose.

Not to impress. Not to conform. But to become more deeply, more clearly, yourself.

What are you curating right now?

Today marked a historic moment for the Roman Catholic Church. Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost of Chicago has been elected as the 267th pope, taking the name Pope Leo XIV. His election marks the first time an American has ascended to the papacy, signaling a significant shift in the Church's global leadership.

While throngs of onlookers cheered in St. Peter’s Square and 1.4 million Roman Catholics around the world accepted a prayer of peace from the new Pontiff, the MAGA hate machine revved its engine and commenced its unified belching of criticism, attacks, and accusations of “wokeness” and “Marxism”.

One well-known Catholic MAGA voice, Jack Posobiec, stated that Christians are tired of “mamby-pamby, light, substance-less Christian faith”. MAGA wanted a conservative Pope to push back against what they describe as the “destruction of Western Civilization”. The conservative wing of the Church had been critical of Pope Francis’ stances on homosexuality and divorce.

The usual chorus of critics include Laura Loomer, who stated the new pope is “anti-Trump, anti-MAGA, pro-open Borders, and a total Marxist like Pope Francis, and said it is “Gross” that he now leads the Church. This MAGA crash out is fueled in part by a comment made by Pope Leo XIV when he was still Cardinal Robert Prevost. Cardinal Prevost has shared or retweeted social media posts that were critical of Donald Trump and JD Vance.

One op-ed from the National Catholic Reporter that then Cardinal Prevost shared was titled “JD Vance is wrong: Jesus does not ask us to rank our love for others”. The op-ed was penned in response to comments made by Vance on Fox News in February 2025. Vance stated: “There is a Christian concept that you love your family and then you love your neighbor, and then you love your community, and then you love your fellow citizens, and then after that, prioritize the rest of the world. A lot of the far left has completely inverted that.” This comment by Vance is in keeping with MAGA’s nationalist and isolationist views that hold that we should prioritize ourselves, as Americans, over the rest of the world”

I have been Catholic all my life. Raised in New Orleans, Louisiana, I am the proud graduate of the 158-year-old institution that is St. Mary’s Academy, which was started by an order of African American Nuns, the Sisters of the Holy Family and founded by the Venerable Henriette DeLille. I am also a graduate of the only historically Black Catholic University in the Western Hemisphere, Xavier University of Louisiana. As a practicing Catholic, educated in my faith by caring and learned practitioners, I vehemently disagree with Vance’s comments and applaud Pope Leo XIV for sharing the article.

Wealthy conservative Catholics also tried to influence the Cardinals’ choice during several events and private dinners with Cardinals accented by a promise of possible billions in donations to the Church “so long as we have the right pope.” One such wealthy conservative, Tim Busch of the Napa Institute, would like to see lay members lead the church’s evangelizing efforts. According to the book Opus: The Cult of Dark Money, Human Trafficking, and Right-Wing Conspiracy Inside the Catholic Church, a significant portion of the members of this California based group are affiliated with Opus Dei, a Catholic sect with deep ties to Project 2025. According to the author of the book, the Napa Institute and Opus Dei would like to see American law, politics, and culture adopt a deeply conservative version of Catholicism.

This deeply conservative version would no doubt be approving of the policies of the current administration and would be ok with say, putting kids in cages, or deporting American citizens, or any of the other extreme policies outlined in Project 2025.

Jesus would never condone putting children in cages and my faith teaches that the social positions of MAGA are wrong, on too many levels to go into here. Christianity calls for us to treat others as we would like to be treated, to “love our neighbor as ourselves”.

Who Is Pope Leo XIV?

Born in Chicago in 1955 to immigrant parents, Robert Prevost began his religious journey as an altar boy. He joined the Order of St. Augustine and served as a missionary in Peru, eventually becoming the bishop of Chiclayo. In 2023, Pope Francis appointed him as the head of the Vatican office for bishop nominations, and he was elevated to cardinal in January 2024. Known for his centrist views, Leo XIV has advocated for dialogue, inclusivity, and peace within the Church. He is fluent in six languages and holds dual citizenship in the U.S. and Peru.

Robert Francis Prevost was raised in Chicago but has roots in New Orleans’ 7^th Ward, an enclave historically comprised of Creole people of color. I guess MAGA will totally freak out when they learn of this. In an interview today with CBS affiliate WWL-TV in New Orleans, historian Jari Honora of the Historic New Orleans Collection stated that

the name “Prevost” made him think there may be French Canadian or Acadian (Cajun) ancestry in the new pope’s lineage but had “no clue it would be a very recent New Orleans connection”. “The Holy father’s ancestors are identified as either Black or Mulatto”, said Honara.

Rep. Troy Carter called the occasion of an American Pope with Creole ancestry a “testament to the enduring strength and global reach of New Orleans’ diverse faith community.

The Significance of the Name "Leo XIV"

Upon accepting the papacy, Prevost chose the name Leo XIV, a nod to previous popes named Leo, particularly Leo XIII, who was known for his advocacy of Catholic social doctrine. The selection of a papal name is a tradition that dates back to the sixth century and often reflects the new pope's vision for his tenure. By choosing "Leo," the new pope signals a commitment to social justice and continuity with his predecessors' reformist legacies.

A Historic First for America

Pope Leo XIV's election is groundbreaking, as he becomes the first American-born pontiff in the history of the Catholic Church. His ascent reflects the Church's growing recognition of its global congregation, particularly in the Americas. Many American Catholics have expressed excitement and hope that his leadership will bring renewed energy and unity to the Church.

As Pope Leo XIV begins his papacy, this Catholic New Orleanian will watch with anticipation to see how his unique background and perspectives will shape the future of the Catholic Church.
