Annie Andrews wins the highly contested senate race in South Carolina. She defeats republican Darline Graham, who replaced her late brother Lindsey Graham as senator this year. She will be the state’s first democratic senator in 20 years. This race suddenly became more competitive once Darline Graham admitted to “not being informed that much on foreign policy”. This marked a change in hopefuls who had longed hope for a different direction for South Carolina.
This marks the first time South Carolina has elected a woman to the senate. This win more than likely angers Trump and his fellow republicans after spending a lot of money on this state, assuming they had this race in the bag. With running a smart and engaging campaign throughout the year, Andrews’ win proves that you should never count anyone candidate out no matter how likely a win is to happen.
