Gina Hinojosa defeats republican incumbent Gregg Abbott in another historic win for democrats in the state of Texas. This ends more than three decades of republican control at the governor’s level. She will be the first Latina governor of Texas and the first democrat to hold this office since 1990. Hinojosa spent her career in public education with her core messages centered around household costs and the betterment of schools.
This win adds to the incredible gaining of seats for democrats at the local and congressional levels. She will join the likes of Keisha Lance Bottoms and Xavier Becerra for historic wins for their respective states (Bottoms for Georgia, Becerra for California). This will not make it any easier as she will have to contend with a republican controlled government in what is sure to be a battle for the future of the lone star state.
