Prevost played a significant role under Pope Francis, who appointed him prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops in 2023—one of the Vatican’s most powerful departments responsible for the selection of bishops around the world. He also served as president of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America and was closely involved in implementing key reforms under Francis, including efforts to give women a more active role in Church governance, such as voting rights in bishop appointments.
Vatican City — May 8, 2025 — In a historic moment for the Catholic Church, Cardinal Robert Prevost of the United States was elected pope today, becoming the first American to ascend to the papacy. He will be known as Pope Leo XIV.
Prevost, 69, was born in Chicago, Illinois. His election was announced after the conclave of cardinals concluded on its second day, with white smoke billowing from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel, signaling the decision to the world. Thousands of pilgrims and visitors gathered in St. Peter’s Square erupted in cheer at the news.
In his first public remarks as pope, Leo XIV expressed gratitude to his fellow Cardinals and paid tribute to his predecessor, the late Pope Francis. “I am humbled by your trust,” he said, “and inspired by the legacy of Pope Francis, who led with compassion and courage.”
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson celebrated the news, posting on social media: “Everything dope, including the Pope, comes from Chicago!”
Though American by birth, Pope Leo XIV has spent much of his life abroad. He studied in Rome and moved to Peru in 1985, where he served as a missionary and later as bishop. His international experience has shaped his pastoral outlook and informed his leadership style.
